messiah

Calvary Church Castlebar and Calvary Church Westport are proud to present "The Meaning of the Messiah - exploring Handel's masterpiece in speech and song". This free event takes place at Lough Lannagh Village, Castlebar on Thursday March 26th at 8 pm, and at Calvary Church Westport, Distillery Road, on Friday March 27th at 8 pm.

A 90-minute presentation will unlock the spiritual treasures of Handel's masterpiece, combining solos by professional singers (Gina Oberoi and Wayne Woodman) with a multimedia explanation of the lyrics by Stephen Childs (Pastor, Calvary Church Castlebar).

Handel's "Messiah" has been thrilling Irish audiences since its world premiere in Dublin in 1741. Recent years have seen performances to sell-out crowds in Knock and Castlebar, with hundreds of people being carried along by the power of pieces such as "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Unto Us a Child is Born". But how many understand the true significance of this masterpiece? It is an ambitious and deeply spiritual work, whose words are drawn from a range of Bible passages, which may be unfamiliar to us.

Now is the opportunity to follow Handel as he takes us on a journey from 700 BC, when the prophet Isaiah predicted the coming of Jesus, to the 1st century AD, when Jesus was born, died, and rose again, and on into the distant future. Listen as the Bible passages are explained in their original context, and delight in the profound message of Jesus' victory over death and evil.

Calvary Church Castlebar (9 Humbert Mall) and Calvary Church Westport (Distillery Road) are non-denominational Christian churches committed to explaining the message of the Bible and showing how its age-old message is of great relevance today.
